What Alt text means
Alt text is a short written description you attach to an image so a screen reader can describe it and so tools that cannot see pictures still know what the image shows.
A directory listing with only a product logo and zero alt text tells a screen reader user nothing, and it gives a crawler no extra context about what the screenshot in your listing is actually showing.
Alt text is not a place to stuff keywords, and writing it does not guarantee a search engine will rank or display the image. It is a description, not an SEO trick.
Write alt text the way you would describe the image over the phone: for a product screenshot, name the screen and the one thing it shows, like 'dashboard showing weekly signups.'
Why this matters for builders
Product screenshots and logos need plain descriptions so listings stay accessible and clear.
Mistake builders make often
Some builders leave alt text blank on every screenshot in a listing, or fill it with a repeated keyword phrase instead of an actual description of the image.
What to do now
Use the Directory Listing Kit to write one clear alt text line for each screenshot before you reuse the same images across directories.
