Startup Directory Submission Checklist for Founders

Prepare consistent product assets, choose the right category, track every submission, verify the live listing, and measure what each directory actually returns.

A strong directory submission starts before the form. Founders need a consistent product identity, a destination that converts, and a way to track whether the resulting listing becomes useful.

Use this checklist after building a focused shortlist with How to Choose Startup Directories Worth Your Time.

Before submitting#

Product identity#

  • Confirm the canonical product name and capitalization.
  • Use the final production domain, not a staging or tracking URL.
  • Write a one-sentence description that states the user, job, and differentiator.
  • Prepare a 50-word description and a 150-word description.
  • Choose one primary category and up to two honest secondary categories.
  • Record current pricing, free-trial terms, and launch stage.

Descriptions should be adapted to the directory's audience without changing the core claim. If one profile calls the product an analytics tool and another calls it an AI design platform, buyers and reviewers receive conflicting entity information.

Destination readiness#

  • Confirm the homepage returns a successful response without login.
  • Check mobile layout, title, meta description, canonical tag, and favicon.
  • Make the primary action clear.
  • Publish pricing or explain how a buyer gets it.
  • Add contact, privacy, and terms pages where appropriate.
  • Verify screenshots and product claims are current.

Asset folder#

  • Square logo with transparent background.
  • Horizontal logo when requested.
  • Product screenshots in at least two common aspect ratios.
  • Short demo video or GIF when it materially explains the workflow.
  • Founder name, role, headshot, and public profile.
  • Launch date and version information.
  • Support and press contact.

Keep one source folder. Do not search old email threads for a different logo on every submission.

Evaluate the directory#

  • The existing catalog contains products like yours.
  • The submission path is open and belongs to the real destination.
  • Pricing and renewal terms are understood.
  • The expected listing is public and useful.
  • Link type has been checked on a current listing.
  • Paid placement is disclosed appropriately.
  • The site shows current editorial or community activity.
  • The likely value justifies the time.

Use Mydentify directory filters for category, pricing, link type, and Domain Rating. Confirm critical details on the destination because requirements change.

During submission#

Complete the form accurately#

  • Use the canonical product URL without unnecessary campaign parameters unless the directory explicitly supports tracking.
  • Choose the narrowest accurate category.
  • Answer eligibility questions truthfully.
  • Use a description written for that directory's readers.
  • Avoid unsupported superlatives such as "best" or "only."
  • Proofread names, links, pricing, and image crops.
  • Save the submitted copy.

Track the event#

Create one row per submission:

FieldExample

Submission URLExact form URL
SubmittedDate and owner
CostFree, one-time, or recurring
StatusSubmitted, approved, rejected, needs update
Expected categorySelected category
Live URLFinal public listing
Link typeFollowed, nofollow, sponsored, UGC, conditional
Referral trackingAnalytics source or clean referrer

This record prevents duplicate submissions and creates evidence for future prioritization.

After submission#

Verify the live listing#

  • Product name, description, category, pricing, and screenshots are accurate.
  • Product link reaches the intended canonical page.
  • Listing is public without an account.
  • Page is linked from a category, search, profile, or launch archive.
  • Link attribute matches the plan or published policy.
  • Sponsorship labels are visible when applicable.
  • Analytics receives the referral correctly.

Request corrections promptly. A live inaccurate listing is not a successful submission.

Measure at 30 and 90 days#

  • Referral visits.
  • Qualified signups or demos.
  • Branded search impressions.
  • Earned mentions or secondary citations.
  • Listing still accessible and accurate.
  • Time and fee compared with the result.

The result may be a useful citation even when referral volume is small. Record that outcome separately from traffic.

What not to automate blindly#

Automation can prefill repeated fields and maintain the tracker. It should not choose categories, accept legal terms, invent founder statements, or submit to unrelated destinations without review.

Manual attention is especially important when a community expects participation, an editor requests a unique explanation, or a paid plan changes the link and placement terms.

The goal is not a spreadsheet containing the largest possible number of submitted forms. It is a smaller set of accurate, approved, durable listings that help the right people discover the product.

Next, compare free and paid startup directories or return to the startup directory dataset.
