How to Increase Domain Rating Without Chasing a Number

Increase Domain Rating by earning followed links from relevant referring domains, reclaiming lost links, and publishing assets worth citing—not by purchasing metric inflation.

To increase Domain Rating, a website generally needs followed links from additional websites with meaningful backlink profiles. But the durable objective is not the number. It is earning relevant references that also improve discovery, credibility, and referral paths.

Ahrefs explains that DR is influenced by unique referring domains, the DR of those domains, how many other sites they link to, and followed link behavior. Because the scale is logarithmic, growth becomes harder at higher levels.

Start with the right baseline#

Record:

  • Current DR.
  • Number of followed referring domains.
  • Organic impressions and clicks.
  • Referral traffic and conversions.
  • Pages receiving the most external links.
  • Broken or redirected URLs with backlinks.

The baseline prevents a common mistake: celebrating a higher DR without knowing whether the site earned useful visibility.

Links from a new credible domain can influence DR more than repeated links from a domain that already links to you. That does not justify pursuing random domains. Relevance and real placement remain the quality gate.

Strong sources include:

  • Editorial coverage based on original data or expertise.
  • Customer and partner pages where the relationship is real.
  • Maintained industry resources.
  • Relevant software, startup, or professional directories.
  • Open-source repositories and technical documentation when applicable.
  • Event, association, accelerator, or portfolio pages tied to genuine participation.

Use the 90-day startup link-building plan to sequence these sources.

Publish linkable assets#

A product homepage rarely answers a writer's need for evidence. A focused asset can.

Examples:

  • A public dataset with a documented collection method.
  • A benchmark showing distributions rather than one flattering number.
  • A calculator that helps someone make a decision.
  • A definitive tutorial grounded in real implementation.
  • A regularly maintained industry map.
  • A transparent case study containing both results and constraints.

The strongest asset is adjacent to the product's expertise. Mydentify can credibly analyze directory data and agent-readable product pages. It should not publish generic finance statistics merely because the topic attracts links.

Some of the easiest improvements restore lost value:

  1. Redirect retired URLs with backlinks to the most relevant current page.
  2. Correct links using an obsolete domain or malformed URL.
  3. Find unlinked brand mentions and request a link when it improves attribution.
  4. Repair important pages that return errors.
  5. Consolidate duplicate resources only when one version clearly replaces the others.

Avoid redirecting every dead page to the homepage. The replacement should satisfy the original reference.

Use directories selectively#

A directory can add a referring domain and a durable product record. Prioritize fit, a public listing, useful description, and an operating editorial process. Then compare DR and link type.

Browse startup directories by those fields. The goal is not to submit to every row. It is to identify the destinations where the product belongs.

A marketplace can sell a placement on a high-DR domain while hiding the page deep in an unrelated section. The link may be temporary, surrounded by other paid links, or marked in a way the seller did not disclose. Even if Ahrefs records it, the placement can lack audience, relevance, and editorial legitimacy.

Google's spam policies explicitly address links created primarily to manipulate rankings. Sponsorship and advertising are normal business activities; they should be labeled appropriately rather than sold as invisible editorial endorsement.

Review progress quarterly#

Ask:

  • Did we gain relevant referring domains?
  • Which linked pages earned impressions and qualified visits?
  • Which assets were cited without direct outreach?
  • Did branded discovery improve?
  • Are new links attached to pages we intend to maintain?
  • Did DR move, and does that movement agree with the underlying evidence?

If DR rises with no other positive signal, inspect the new links. If DR stays flat while the company earns excellent niche referrals and customers, do not discard the work merely because one logarithmic metric moved slowly.

DR is a useful instrument panel, not the destination. Read what Domain Rating measures and how it differs from PageRank before setting any authority target.
