What Revenue churn means
Revenue churn is the share of your recurring revenue lost to downgrades and cancellations in a period — it tracks lost dollars, not just lost customers.
A founder might keep the same number of customers month over month while several of them downgrade to a cheaper plan, quietly shrinking revenue even though the customer count on the dashboard looks unchanged.
Revenue churn is not the same as customer churn. A business can have low customer churn and still lose meaningful revenue if its larger accounts are the ones downgrading.
Calculate revenue churn by tracking the dollar value lost to downgrades and cancellations each month, separate from the simple count of customers who left.
Why this matters for builders
Revenue can shrink even when customer count looks stable.
Mistake builders make often
Some founders only track how many customers left and miss that a handful of large-account downgrades are shrinking revenue even faster than the customer count suggests.
