What Dofollow means
Dofollow describes a normal link with no special rel attribute — the kind search engines may treat as a signal of trust between two sites. It is the default, not a special upgrade.
A founder collecting directory links might assume every listing gives a dofollow link by default, only to discover through inspecting the page source that most of them use nofollow or sponsored links instead.
Dofollow is not something a directory advertises consistently or accurately on its own marketing page. The only reliable way to know is checking the actual rel attribute on the live listing.
Right-click the link on a live listing, view the page source, and search for your domain to see whether it carries any rel attribute at all.
Why this matters for builders
Confirm dofollow on the live listing page before you treat a directory as a link opportunity.
Mistake builders make often
Builders often assume a directory link is dofollow just because the directory's marketing copy calls itself a 'backlink opportunity,' without checking the actual rel attribute.
What to do now
Run the listing URL through the Dofollow/Nofollow Checker before you count that directory as a real link opportunity.
