Product builders should not choose between traditional SEO and AI discovery. Both depend on accessible pages, clear entities, useful content, links, and trustworthy evidence. AI retrieval adds new interfaces and measurement questions, but it does not erase the web foundation underneath them.
The shared foundation#
Both search engines and AI retrieval systems need to find and interpret public information.
The shared work includes:
- Crawlable server responses.
- Canonical URLs and sensible redirects.
- Descriptive titles and headings.
- Useful text that answers a real question.
- Internal links and sitemaps.
- Accurate structured data.
- Consistent product identity.
- Independent references and citations.
- Fast, accessible pages with a good human experience.
Google's people-first guidance remains a strong editorial standard: provide original information, substantial value, trustworthy sourcing, and a satisfying answer.
What traditional SEO optimizes#
Traditional SEO usually focuses on:
- Indexation in search engines.
- Relevance for a query.
- Search-result titles and snippets.
- Rankings and click-through rate.
- Organic landing-page behavior.
- Technical crawl and rendering quality.
- Link authority and site architecture.
The primary unit is often a query and a page. Measurement comes from Search Console, analytics, rank tracking, and backlink tools.
What AI discovery adds#
AI answers may retrieve several sources, synthesize them, and present a response without sending a click. A product can be mentioned, omitted, or mischaracterized even when its pages rank for traditional search.
Additional concerns include:
- Whether the product entity is recognized consistently.
- Whether a passage contains an extractable direct answer.
- Which sources an assistant chooses to cite.
- Whether third-party descriptions agree with the canonical product page.
- Whether public feeds or Markdown improve retrieval.
- Whether agent crawlers can access the intended pages.
- How to monitor prompts when providers expose limited analytics.
A practical comparison#
| Area | Traditional SEO | AI discovery |
|---|---|---|
| Primary output | Ranked result and click | Synthesized answer, mention, citation, or action |
| Core content unit | Page matched to query | Passage and entity assembled with other sources |
| Authority evidence | Links, site quality, relevance | Links plus corroborating source diversity and entity consistency |
| Machine surfaces | HTML, sitemap, structured data | Same foundation plus optional feeds, Markdown, llms.txt, skills or APIs |
| Measurement | Impressions, clicks, ranking, conversions | Mentions, citations, referral traffic, crawler activity, prompt-level observation |
| Control | Influence, never guarantee | Even less direct control over generated output |
Do not rename ordinary SEO and sell it as certainty#
Clear headings, structured data, and citations were useful before generative search. They remain useful. Emerging terms such as GEO or answer-engine optimization can describe a different output environment, but they do not justify ranking guarantees.
An llms.txt file can orient compatible systems. It cannot force ingestion. Schema can reduce ambiguity. It cannot validate a false claim. AI crawler traffic proves access, not citation.
Build one content system#
Choose durable topic ownership#
Give one URL each primary intent. Mydentify's /directories page owns the broad directory dataset query. Educational articles explain how to evaluate, submit, and measure directory listings without duplicating the ranked collection.
Write answer-first, evidence-rich sections#
Open with the direct answer. Use tables for comparisons, lists for procedures, and source links beside consequential claims. Include enough context that a passage remains accurate when quoted alone.
Connect pages through normal links#
Build topic hubs and related guides. Every important page should have at least one internal link. Use descriptive anchor text without repeating an exact keyword unnaturally.
Publish consistent machine-readable representations#
Use accurate JSON-LD, sitemaps, RSS, and public feeds. Add Markdown or llms.txt when they improve access to content that already exists.
Earn external corroboration#
Participate in the sources your audience trusts. Publish original data and implementation evidence. Maintain accurate profiles and directory listings. Never manufacture independent proof on properties you control.
Measure search and AI discovery together#
Create a shared scorecard:
- Indexed canonical pages.
- Non-brand search impressions and clicks.
- Relevant referring domains.
- Article-to-product and article-to-directory paths.
- Assistant referrals when available.
- Mentions and citations across a fixed prompt set.
- Incorrect or stale descriptions that require correction.
- Qualified product actions from all discovery channels.
Review changes over time and avoid attributing causation to one markup edit without stronger evidence.
The priority for builders#
Start with traditional technical and editorial quality. Then make that same source material easier for agents to retrieve. Do not create a separate, exaggerated "AI version" of the company.
The best product record is one a person can understand, a crawler can access, an agent can parse, and an independent source can verify.

We name the source, record the review date, and separate reported claims from our own checks. Read the methodology and editorial policy before citing a finding or sending a correction.
